SEO is a large topic that is constantly evolving but the fundamentals stay the same. Create a well coded website that is optimized for performance, user experience and search engines. Add high quality content on a consistent basis and make sure to integrate Social Sharing and links to your networks. Create a good email signup form and the basics are done.
The thing to remember is there are no magic SEO solutions or shortcuts to properly optimize a website it takes a fair amount of work over a period of time.
However as many have proven, expending work and time alone do not guarantee optimization: having the right tools and following an ethical search engine approved & methodical strategy is the key to success.

Google Webmasters Tools are vital. Most people don’t use it. It has some great features and one of my favorites is Fetch as Google which helps you to send a signal to the search engine of new content on your website.
Google Analytics is vital.
Google+ – this one is debated by many but if you plan properly the seo benefits are amazing. Most people have a Gmail account so if on your website you can lead the person to Google Plus your site or article, then as long as they are signed in to gmail, your content will benefit in their search results. There’s a lot more to it but if done properly is a great tool.
YouTube let’s face it, YouTube is the second largest search engine and people love videos. So this is a no brainer.
Uptime Robot monitors your websites uptime.
Pingdom Tools helps to see how your website performs and analyzes your website. It also gives you good advice on what needs work.
TinyJPG– Compress JPEG images intelligently this can drastically reduce the file size of your image without loss of quality.
Ahrefs – That I use on daily basis for multiple purposes, such as to analyze my competitor’s backlink profiles, to find relevant content related to my keywords, and to do keyword research via their keyword explorer tool.
FCS Networker: To do web2.0 tasks for 2nd tier link building.
